Webster, John c. 1580-1634. English
dramatist, who ranks after Shakespeare as the
greatest tragedian of his time and is the
Jacobean whose plays are most frequently
performed today. His two great plays The
White Devil 1608 and The Duchess of Malfi
1614 are dark, violent tragedies obsessed
with death and decay and infused with poetic
brilliance.
